Meridian Bioworks was founded in 2021 in Norrköping, Sweden, by a team that wanted fermentation biology to meet the transparency standards of a published science. The company now runs 14 production strains across a 2,000-litre pilot hall.

2021
Founding
Meridian Bioworks is founded by three researchers from fermentation science and metabolic engineering, with seed support from Nordic deep-tech investors.
2022
First strain, first dataset
The first production strain is engineered and the company publishes its first open process dataset — establishing the transparency norm early.
2023
Fermentation Hall opens
A 200-litre pilot hall opens in Norrköping, doubling the programme portfolio and bringing continuous-culture capability online.
2024
2,000-litre scale
The Fermentation Hall expands to 2,000 litres. The downstream recovery train and the Material Validation Lab come online in the same year.
2025
Application readiness
Three material grades are in validation, partner conversations are underway for application scaling, and the first independent methodology review is scheduled for 2026.
